THE EXAMINATIONS
In order to become an Approved
Driving Instructor (ADI) you are required to pass three examinations.
First is a Theoretical Examination
secondly an eyesight test and a Practical Driving Test (part
1 & 2) thirdly a Practical
Teaching Test (part 3)
THE THEORETICAL
EXAMINATION is 100 multiple choice questions, divided into 4 bands. The
pass mark is 85% but 80% must also be achieved in each band,
and you cannot take part 2 until you have passed the theory
examination. The questions are based on the following topics:

Therefore it is essential
to have some training for part 2 and part 3 prior to taking
the written examination. THIS WILL HELP TO SPEED UP YOUR
TUITION.
THE
PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST You must be able to satisfy
the examiner that you are able to drive to
a very high standard over varying road and
traffic conditions to carry out set manoeuvring
exercises in a professional manner. The test last for about
an hour.
THE
PRACTICAL TEACHING TEST Your teaching technique needs
to be highly skilled, worthy of a professional who will take
money for passing on your skill to help others learn quickly.
The examiner will act as your learner and you will be asked
to teach him first as a beginner or a learner with little experience
then as a learner about driving test standard any one of the
following exercises. This is to prove your ability to teach
learners of varying ability.
(a) explaining the controls
of the vehicle
(b) moving off
(c) making normal stops
(d) reversing, and while doing so entering
limited openings to the right or to the left
(e) turning to
face the opposite direction, using forward and reverse gears
(f) parking close to the kerb, using forward and reverse gears
(g) using mirrors and explaining how to make an emergency stop
(h) approaching and turning corners
(i) judging speed and making
normal progress
(j) road positioning
(k) dealing with road
junctions
(l) dealing with cross roads
(m) dealing with pedestrian
crossings
(n) meeting, crossing the path of and overtaking
and allowing adequate clearance.
Now that you have passed
the theory examination, the eyesight test the driving test
and the teaching examination you may apply to have your
name added to the Register of Approved Driving Instructors.
